Do faecal indicator organisms exhibit a first foul flush in combined sewers?

چکیده
As part of the revised EU Bathing Water Directive, there is scope to discount bathing water quality samples which show poor water quality if poor water quality is predicted and the public forewarned. The Cloud to Coast (C2C) project is developing a model to allow prediction of faecal indicator organism (FIO) concentrations in bathing waters. One of the C2C sub-models is investigating FIO loads from urban catchments. As part of this urban sub-model, the hypothesis of whether FIO loads exhibit a first foul flush in wet weather events is being investigated. This paper presents typical data from two combined sewer overflow outfalls, and based on the data collected suggests there is no first foul flush of FIOs. However sampling took place over a wet summer and hence antecedent dry weather periods (ADWP) were short, and previous research has shown ADWP to be a factor in the first foul flush of pollutants.

Searching for storm water inflows in foul sewers using fibre-optic distributed temperature sensing.
A major drawback of separate sewer systems is the occurrence of illicit connections: unintended sewer cross-connections that connect foul water outlets from residential or industrial premises to the storm water system and/or storm water outlets to the foul sewer system. The amount of unwanted storm water in foul sewer systems can be significant, resulting in a number of detrimental effects on t...
متن کاملBiodegradability of organic matter associated with sewer sediments during first flush.
The high pollution load in wastewater at the beginning of a rain event is commonly known to originate from the erosion of sewer sediments due to the increased flow rate under storm weather conditions. It is essential to characterize the biodegradability of organic matter during a storm event in order to quantify the effect it can have further downstream to the receiving water via discharges fro...
متن کاملSanitisation of Faecal Sludge by Ammonia Treatment Technology for Safe Reuse in Agriculture
Faecal sludge contains valuable plant nutrients and can be used as a fertiliser in agriculture, instead of being emitted as a pollutant. As this involves a risk of pathogen transmission, it is crucial to inactivate the pathogens in faecal sludge. One treatment alternative is ammonia sanitisation, as uncharged ammonia (NH3) inactivates pathogens. The aim of this thesis was to study how the patho...

In view of all the stress placed on post-war planning and construc tion, it was thought that a word of warning might not be amiss. It is not the purpose of this paper to discuss details of design or construc tion, but to suggest that a little work and thought at the time of planning may save thousands of dollars in the cost of operation each year. W hat is true respecting the construction of ...
متن کاملThe Effects of De-stocking on Microbial Delivery from Catchment Diffuse Sources in an Area Affected by Foot and Mouth Disease (the Caldew Study)
The virtual elimination of the principal point sources of human bacterial pollution through advanced treatment systems has not produced 100% compliance with microbial standards at all UK bathing water locations where they have been installed. This is partly explained by the existence of diffuse bacterial pollution derived from agricultural activities within catchments draining to the bathing zo...
